@Pawel: Please be aware that there is no official support for MIDI in AdT2, only customized Midisynth mode for making very simplified output to the synthesizer, so better do not expect much from this feature as many people do (resp. read paragraph VIII. MIDI SYNTH MODE in the adtrack2.doc file). As the autodection of UART interface, the only thing for making this work should be to set option "mpu_port=330" or whatever is the configured address of your MPU-401 port. If the autodetection fails, there is probably some problem with configuration of your sound card driver.

Pawel, musician from Ireland. Thursday, 5th June 2014, 17:10

Hi, I'm having a difficulty setting up MIDI with adlib. I'm using midi-to-serial port cable (on old sony vaio pcg-f403). I know the IRQ and address of the com1 port and I set the correct address in the adtrack2.ini file, but the midi fails to initialise. I tested both in win98se and under DOS. Can you suggest anything to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks a lot!
Pawel

P.S. To update on my old post from March - I gave up trying to run adlib under 64bit linux, I had an old laptop that just happens to have an OPL3 chip so I'm using that instead under DOS/WIN98SE.

Does anyone remember the Touhou games on the NEC PC-9801? I'm gonna recreate a song from one of those games.

@frndo: Try with setting option "opl_latency" to 1. If autodetection of Adlib port works, I can't imagine what else could be the problem with no sound there.

Hi!! I have a libretto 110ct and opl3 no sound!! How i configure the .ini file?? Thanks!

HOLY FUCK THERE'S A NEW VERSION OF ADLIB??? giving this a try

Great tunes on the downloads section. I'm feeling a bit inspired to try this!

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Thursday, 15th May 2014, 19:54

@W4LKR: Sorry, I just noticed there is a typo in the below mentioned settings for compatibility text modes. Correct settings are: screen_mode=3, comp_text_mode=0 resp. 1

W4LKR, newbie from The Netherlands. Wednesday, 14th May 2014, 15:28

Hey Subz3ro,

I'll try playing around with the .ini setting again. Thanks a lot for all your help!

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Wednesday, 14th May 2014, 14:55

@W4LKR: Look, the point is - we cannot do anything else (than the already recommended setting of compatibility text mode) with this problem. The tracker uses not really common text mode -> 90x30 characters, which is - using 8x16px font - apparently 720x480px, while graphic card treats it as regular 640x480px (which was the topmost for text-mode resolution as defined by VGA standard). Even this works quite good for (let's say) 99.5% of devices, there is still some very low percent of devices where issues are encountered (Toshiba Libretto is one of them).
I can imagine you do not have problem with other programs / graphical modes, but this is not changing anything. I would really like to help you with this issue, but with this particular notebook brand/model this issue is simply a matter of fact (probably because of extraordinary screen resolution) and there can't be done anything about it :( Please try with advised settings in INI file (screen_mode=0, comp_text_mode=0 resp. 1) and see if this better suits you or not. Thanks :)

W4LKR, newbie from The Netherlands. Wednesday, 14th May 2014, 14:31

Hey Subzero,

Thanks for the reply again! The thing is that I do not have this problem while running for example Doom of Commander Keen, which I find weird. There is a screenmode (I don't exactly know which one, since my Libretto is at home) which can fill my whole screen when placed in the middle (meaning the cut off part on the right, placing that on the 'underscan' part). Any ideas on that maybe?

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Wednesday, 14th May 2014, 12:48

@W4LKR: From the picture it looks like clear *underscan* issue of your graphic card / LCD screen, where nothing can be done from the program's side. You can try how your notebook will handle the "regular" text modes, but I don't know if this has the value of accepting resulting discomfort with moving screen port - it's up to you :)

@FunnyGuyWhoDidn'tBotherToIntroduceHimself: I'm really against strictly moderated discussions, but let's not to make ping-pong game here. This is no discussion thread on a forum, rather a message board page (as you may have noticed from its name). If you are willing to open serious discussion, please either use my email address or follow my advice. Thanks.
As for MIDI support -> this feature is from my side *SOMEWHAT* PLANNED but only for the DOS version of the program and without any roadmap of development or something, so if nobody contributes for it to the OSP, better do not count with it too soon...

W4LKR, newbie from The Netherlands. Wednesday, 14th May 2014, 12:48

Hey subz3ro,

Thanks for the reply! But the problem I'm having is different, Here's a picture: http://imgur.com/gAkiEQz. I'm missing a (I think 2cm) part of the screen on the left. My desktopscreen doesn't have this problem. Can this also be solved by changing the screen_mode part in the .ini file?

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Tuesday, 13th May 2014, 22:42

@W4LKR: If you are referring to the issue with tweaked 90x30 textmode where on Libreto 100CT model several pixels of screen content of the right side are cut off-screen (like visible in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtYOZRarQDs) then this is issue with this particular notebook model. You may try setting compatibility text mode (screen_mode=0, comp_text_mode=0 resp. 1) if you didn't try it yet, but this reduces the screen content to a port of 80x30 resp. 80x25 and you may use a mouse for scrolling this screen port over whole screen content.

W4LKR, newbie from The Netherlands. Tuesday, 13th May 2014, 14:20

By the way, I already tried changing the screen options on the .ini file.

W4LKR, newbie from The Netherlands. Tuesday, 13th May 2014, 0:28

Hey All,

Anyone knows how to get a decent fullscreen view on a Toshiba Libretto 100CT? 800x480 screen (:

Thanks in advance!

Today some major information updates were done to Google Code project.
Also, outdated tasks in Issues section were deleted. For those tasks that are already being handled, there are some requests for test retrial. As some of the users who raised them don't seem to go there regularly, I would be grateful to you, who have been encountering the same issue and could try if the fault has disappeared, if you can give some feedback about it there. Thanks in advance!

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Monday, 14th April 2014, 18:35

@max: Short answer -- No sir, there is not :)
Ok, enough jokes -- I'll give you more thorough answer too, of course. Even though it would be possible to output the pattern data to some sample-based tracker's file format, I don't see the point behind this -- why an *AT2* user would want to have such feature (other than ripping the pattern data for further processing in sample-based tracker, which is against our FM-positiveness-philosophy, though :) I think in opposite direction this makes sense, and even though AT2 doesn't have "direct" support for importing sample modules of other trackers, this is possible by converting them to S3M format first, which you are able to open in AT2 directly then.

max, musician from germany. Sunday, 13th April 2014, 1:38

small question: is there a way of converting adlib tracker songs into a module format, such as xm, it or s3m?

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Wednesday, 9th April 2014, 20:02

Recently released DOS and SDL/Win32 versions were rebuilt. SDL/Win32 version has some bugfixes in 'per track' recording mode, DOS version has some bugfix for mouse driver causing text cursor not positioned correctly. Also default typing mode was (due to some confusion for old users) changed back to "FT" mode.
If you have already downloaded any of these versions, I strongly recommend to re-download it again.

The Wind Fish, coder from Germany. Sunday, 30th March 2014, 17:36

Hi Pawel,
Due to adtrack2 being a 32bit-only, unfortunately, you need a multiarch-system in order to execute adtrack2 (or any 32bit binary, actually). It's known to work on my gentoo box, no experience with ubuntu, however.
Check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MultiArch for further info, I'm sure the Ubuntu folks can help you.

Just putting a .so somewhere will not help you (it actually will, if you gather *ALL* the dependencies recursively... But that leads you straight into dependency hell, which is why there is "multiarch" ;)).

Let me know if doing multiarch works for you :)

cheers,
The Wind Fish

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Saturday, 29th March 2014, 21:48

@Pawel: Well, you can't compile it from current sources to 64bit either, because there are many (many...) 32bit assembler lines which are not treated by any compiler so far. Plan is to make a full Pascal source for this purpose to the future, but this will be for longer time to make real.

Pawel, musician from Ireland. Saturday, 29th March 2014, 16:51

@subz3ro: Thank you kindly for your reply. I figured it must be to do with my x64 system. Probably I need to compile it from the source code. For the moment I'm using the Adlib Windows version in wine under linux and it works really well. Thanks a lot

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Saturday, 29th March 2014, 12:18

@Pawel: SDL/Linux package is prepared by member Windfisch, but I suppose that as it is compiled as x86 (32bit) application, it won't run under your Linux x64 system. I'm no expert in Linux, so I cannot give you advice if there is some workaround (run in some compatibility mode or something), so you must either write to him directly, or wait until he will read this discussion on message board.

Pawel, musician from Ireland. Friday, 28th March 2014, 4:10

Hi, I tried to look for the answer to the following problem on this forum and elsewhere and after trying many things I decided I should post a question here.

I'm trying to run Adlib Tracker II Linux SDL version (2.4.13) on Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit system.

The executable can't find a 32 bit libSDL-1.2.so.0 and after downloading one, placing it in the app directory and preloading it using LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/the/lib it complains about further libraries not being 32 bit.

Am I missing something?

Thank you for your great work!

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Friday, 14th March 2014, 1:42

Check out the new bugfixed versions in download section :o) DOS version should (finally) have much better responsiveness on slower computers!

The Wind Fish, coder from Germany. Tuesday, 4th March 2014, 3:40

ad SDL/Linux version: yeah, the file issues *should* be gone, which is what i thought two times before already :)
If i missed some spots, please notify me ;)

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Tuesday, 4th March 2014, 1:59

Bugfixed SDL/Linux version (2.4.11.2) available in Download section.
All file-related issues should be gone now.

Maan, opl3-geek from USA. Wednesday, 26th February 2014, 7:44

subz3ro - I asked out of curiosity :)))
The RAW format I mention is not related to WAV. It is the RDOS format that is close to DRO.
It is easy to convert RAW and DRO to MIDI.
So it comes as a handy addition to the program - to write DRO (or RAW).

As I said, this was out of curiosity.

As for the bank broswer and editor. Definitely. This is more important :)))

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Sunday, 23rd February 2014, 22:26

@Maan: As the DRO file format, this one is sensefull, but I didn't have time to check it yet -- but yes, this one would be good to have in addition to WAV recording.

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Sunday, 23rd February 2014, 22:20

@Maan: Theoretically it should be possible to make the OPL3 emulation under MS-DOS too, but again - I miss any common sense for it, as we have these SDL (Windows and Linux) versions already. I hardly believe anybody in 2014 does all his arrangement exclusively under MS-DOS to require this feature -- and it's then pure waste of resources and coding time (in my humble opinion :) which we can use for more usable things (let's say this AT2 instrument bank browser & editor).
Writing to RAW is absolutely no problem, as you can get it from WAV with cutting out first 40 bytes used for WAV header. Again, implementing this to the tracker is possible, but what for? If I would know somebody really uses it, I can make an option for saving WAV vs. RAW in config file, this is the very least, really, but there are already quite many options in the config file so each new (unnecessary) one makes the things just a little more user-unfriendly and complicated. But on the other hand, I can do it specially for you, so you don't get impression of me that I'm rejecting all your ideas :-))

Maan, opl3-geek from USA. Sunday, 23rd February 2014, 22:17

subz3ro -
Just out of curiosity. Can WAV writing in DOS version be done via using opl3 emulation from M.A.M.E. geared only for writing to WAV?
Also, do you know if writing to RAW or DRO meets with same difficulty in DOS?

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Sunday, 23rd February 2014, 14:34

@Maan: For DOS version, recording to WAV is kinda problem. Maybe it would be possible for Creative SoundBlaster cards, as I can remember they featured something like "what you hear" recording even with MS-DOS drivers, but it would be definitely not possible as generic function supported on all sound cards equipped with OPL3. So most probably we will stick with the user's abilities and experience here -- how anybody can handle it with his specific setup ;)

Maan, opl3-geek from USA. Saturday, 22nd February 2014, 4:55

subz3ro -
This is quite exciting. I just have to download the SDL version. I hope it works on my DOS/WIN95 PC. Another SDL program (SchismTracker) reported an error and won't run. But I can always use an XP PC for this purpose.
True, we can use a sound editor to go between mono and stereo looool we, the spoiled users, are just lazy.

Any plan to add wave writing to the DOS version? :)))
Also, please please consider one final thing: writing into a RAW or DRO format.
In some future version :)))

You are the gift of gods to the world of OPL3. Who would have believed we are discussing this in 2014 :))))

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Friday, 21st February 2014, 22:22

In the download section is available new SDL version with major improvement in OPL3 emulation of 4OP channels and more fine stuff.

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Friday, 21st February 2014, 12:35

@Maan: Sure, WAV recorder writes only unmuted tracks. In fact it records exactly "what you hear" in the tracker. In next version will be also synchronization with song playback and optional Fade-in/Fade-out processing. Option for mono/stereo would be also possible, but I don't see any real reason for it (one can convert the resulting WAV file with some sound processing tool anytime, though).

Maan, opl3-geek from USA. Thursday, 20th February 2014, 22:48

subz3ro - With the SDL version. Does the wave writer write only UNMUTED tracks? This would help in writing multiple wave files per selected unmuted tracks. Also, is there an option for mono or stereo?
I ask because I do not use sdl version.

Samuel, newbie from Australia. Saturday, 15th February 2014, 5:59

General playback was affected as well, but setting opl_latency=1 worked beautifully. Thanks! :)

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Friday, 14th February 2014, 21:30

@Samuel: Try with option "opl_latency=1" in the config file.... but if it's only issue with instrument preview and not general OPL3 playback issue in AT2, I don't give much chances to it.

Samuel, newbie from Australia. Friday, 14th February 2014, 19:18

Is there an incompatibility with SB16 VIBRA cards? It appears that proper register data isn't making it to the OPL3 chip, thus whenever I preview an instrument, I get all kinds of bizarre sounds, but mostly silence and pops. I've tried two cards (CT2260 and CT2800) and two motherboards without luck. All other applications that utilize OPL3 work as they should.

The instruments I made work perfectly fine under DOSBox's OPL3 emulation, so my instruments aren't broken.

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Friday, 14th February 2014, 11:45

You can, of course, do it with any sampling rate you like. :) IMHO it's just wasting of system resources, and as you probably know, we are already close to the limit with current setup (44/48kHz and 16bit) :)
I would rather focus on speedup of current stuff (in first row) and then when it's working smooth with some reserves for improvement, there can be added things like studio quality sample rates, eye-blasting desktop resolutions, etc.

The Wind Fish, coder from Germany. Friday, 14th February 2014, 4:24

Yes, 192kHz ;)
Why should it not deserve it, I mean, the emulation can use whatever sampling rate it likes. If one used 32bit samples instead of cheesy 16bit... :>

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Thursday, 13th February 2014, 19:05

There is new SDL version (2.4.10) including WAV writer available for download :)
@windfisch: 192kHz? Seriously? Oh, come on... that OPL3 emulation is far from being so good to deserve it! :-)))

The Wind Fish, coder from Germany. Thursday, 13th February 2014, 3:57

Hi Artem,

i'm actually working on some features i desire, and exporting to a WAV (with high sample rates up to 192000Hz) is on my list.

This doesn't look too hard, and if subz3ro permits it, i'll make my fixes and additions publicly available soon.

Cheers,
The Wind Fish

Artem, newbie from Russia. Wednesday, 12th February 2014, 15:34

Record in wav would become excellent addition. Thanks!

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Wednesday, 12th February 2014, 11:57

If you have downloaded SDL version 2.4.09 yesterday, please re-download it again. Program package has been updated. Thanks.

subz3ro, coder from Slovakia. Tuesday, 11th February 2014, 22:46

There are new versions available in the Download section :o)

@agargara: Best is to record with DOS version and catch the real OPL3 on soundcard's output with some external device. If you are satisified with OPL3 emulation, you can do it with Windows' Sound Mapper and recording "What U Hear" input with AT2 SDL version. DOSBox is also an option, but its OPL3 emulation lacks already compared to AT2 SDL. I'm planning to add WAV writer to the AT2 SDL version, just be patient :)

@flo: Yup. I got it ;)

agargara, newbie from Japan. Tuesday, 11th February 2014, 8:56

@subz3ro thanks! Using ZF0 works but I want to keep the sustain, so I realised alternating the notes in two tracks with note offs was the best solution.

Also, I'm wondering what's the best way to export .adlib to a .wav file? Just recording the output of DosBOX maybe?

The Wind Fish, coder from Germany. Tuesday, 11th February 2014, 2:59

Hi subz3ro!
I just want to be sure that my second mail is not marked as spam. If you haven't received a reply from me, please check you spam folder :)

If you have experience with the id game Doom, all the game data is stored in what is known as an IWAD file. In there is a 'lump' called 'GENMIDI', Doom's custom instrument set. Those instruments are awesome in-game, so I'm after a way of dumping them as individual SBI files. I've already dumped the GENMIDI lump from the IWAD, that's easy, it's just getting to the instrument data that's difficult.

By looking at information about it, the data is somewhat similar to SBI, except all instruments are in this single file, and there are no obvious tools out there that can dump the instrument data from this file.
